Digital Vigilantes Strike: Hackers vs. Data Stealing Company

A Band of Hackers Executes a Reversal on Data Theft Company

In a surprising turn of events, a group of skilled hackers has carried out a clever maneuver against a Portuguese company named WebDetetive, which specializes in data theft. This incident embodies a true sense of poetic justice. The hackers not only stole the company’s data but also disrupted some of its operational activities.

The company in question, involved in espionage, had been infecting Android devices across South America, with a particular focus on Brazil. As a result, WebDetetive had been secretly taking sensitive data from hundreds of thousands of devices. The exact purpose of this collected data remains uncertain, but it’s likely that it was being sold to the highest bidders for financial gain.

The anonymous group of hackers skillfully exploited various vulnerabilities to breach the servers and user databases of the Portuguese company. This breach allowed them access to WebDetetive’s data repository and also led to the severance of the company’s connections to its victims.

The hackers explained their actions, stating, “We did so intentionally—because we had the ability. Motivated by a strong dislike for surveillanceware.”

Currently, the non-profit organization DDoSecrets is in possession of a substantial data dump, totaling 1.5 gigabytes, which has revealed the full extent of WebDetetive’s impact. As a result of the breach, a significant number of 76,794 devices were compromised, and within the data cache were 74,336 unique customer email addresses.

    Heroes or Adversaries?

While it’s still too early to definitively identify the hackers or confirm their success in disconnecting the victimized devices, their strategic move presents an interesting alternative perspective. In contrast to the usual portrayal of these individuals as villains, they emerge as digital vigilantes in this scenario—employing a form of poetic justice by using their expertise to dismantle a network that invades individuals’ privacy.

    The Story of WebDetetive Continues

The origins of WebDetetive can be traced back to OwnSpy, an equally infamous spyware application originating from Spain. Although the people behind the administration of WebDetetive remain anonymous, the connection to OwnSpy suggests the existence of a broader network supporting these malicious activities.
