Unveiling the Impressive Quest 3 Controller Tracking: Insights from Beat Saber Founder and Meta CTO

    Quest 3 controller tracking

founder of Beat Saber shares thoughts on the tracking capabilities of the Quest 3 controllers: Rest assured; it performs admirably.

Although the Quest Touch Plus controllers lack tracking rings, this omission should not impact the overall tracking precision.

The Touch controllers, initially introduced in 2016, feature tracking rings adorned with infrared LEDs, enabling tracking accuracy at a sub-millimeter level. However, the new Meta Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers do not possess these tracking rings, prompting concerns about their level of accuracy.

During a recent Q&A session on Instagram, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, elucidated the distinction in tracking methodology and affirmed the controllers’ exemplary performance. He stated, returning to the original Oculus Touch controllers, the outer ring is adorned with a pattern of LEDs, forming a celestial constellation. This intricate design allows the computer vision system within the headsets to track the controllers in three-dimensional space. The new controllers, although not visible due to their infrared nature, still possess infrared LEDs arranged in a similar celestial constellation. While these LEDs may be partially obstructed, our advanced computer vision techniques, amalgamated with our hand models, compensate for this limitation. Consequently, our hand tracking system operates concurrently with the controllers, resulting in exceptional performance. Additionally, we leverage IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) and smoothing algorithms to seamlessly fill any gaps in tracking. The outcome is highly satisfactory.

The introduction of hand tracking with the Meta Quest 3 will further enhance the user experience.

Beat Saber is often regarded as the gold standard for assessing the quality and accuracy of controller tracking. Co-founder of Beat Games, Jaroslav Beck, assuages any apprehensions regarding the Touch Plus controllers by confidently stating, Rest assured, they perform admirably. Beck shared this sentiment on Twitter during the weekend.

Furthermore, another statement was issued by Meta engineer Misha Davidov, also on Twitter. He proclaimed; they pass the Expert+ test. The only limitation is the inability to use the claw grip compared to the Q2, for reasons that are self-evident.
