Samsung is Developing the Large Language Model (LLM) for Internal Use like CHATGPT
Samsung has initiated the extensive development of its proprietary Large Language Model (LLM) for internal applications, in response to the recent disclosure of its internal data. Spearheaded by Samsung Research, this endeavor has received substantial investments in terms of workforce and resources. Notably, all available GPU resources have been allocated to the development of the LLM, a pivotal component in training such sophisticated models. Samsung aims to finalize the initial iteration of its LLM within a span of two months.
The primary focus of Samsung’s LLM solution will revolve around document summarization, software development, and language translation. While the company has yet to determine the possibility of making the AI solution accessible to the general public, its internal utilization is regarded as a paramount concern. The previous dependence on third-party generative AI solutions, including ChatGPT, resulted in the unfortunate occurrence of data leakage. Consequently, Samsung has instituted a prohibition on the usage of external solutions of this nature, opting instead to embark on the creation of its exclusive AI technology.
Samsung firmly believes that the implementation of AI solutions based on LLM technology can considerably curtail the time required for software development and semiconductor design. Although Samsung explored potential partnerships with esteemed corporations like Google, Microsoft, Naver, and OpenAI, the decision to pursue an in-house AI solution was ultimately reached during a high-level management meeting, which involved the presence of Lee Jae-yong.
Numerous South Korean enterprises, including Kakao, LG, Naver, and SKT, are also engrossed in developing their own LLM-based generative AI solutions, such as KoGPT, ExaOne, HyperCloverX, and A-Dot. These solutions showcase remarkable human-like artistic and literary capabilities. Nonetheless, the challenges surrounding data accuracy and information privacy persist as significant obstacles that necessitate resolution throughout the ongoing development process.
