According to IBM’s AI leader, a computer science degree may not be required anymore to secure a job in the tech industry.
Matthew Candy, IBM’s worldwide managing partner for generative AI, stated to Fortune that AI would greatly simplify the process of product development for individuals lacking technical expertise.
“The rate at which individuals will be capable of generating an idea, evaluating the idea, and producing something will be greatly increased,” Candy stated in a piece released on Saturday.
“You don’t have to possess a computer science degree to accomplish that,” he stated.
As per Candy, the increasing presence of AI would prioritise the importance of talents such as critical and creative thinking.
“Questioning, creativity skills, and innovation will be highly significant because I believe AI will increase the potential for creative thinking,” he stated in a previous interview with Fortune.
It’s not only employment in the IT sector, however. Candy mentioned that developments in AI image-generation technologies could potentially impact individuals in the arts as well.
You will have the opportunity to assume the position of a designer. “You don’t have to be a graphic designer or have an art degree to do these things,” Candy told the site.
Candy’s comments reflect the statements made by Aneesh Raman, the Vice President of LinkedIn, during an appearance on Microsoft’s podcast “Worklab” in November.
Raman informed host Molly Wood that he anticipates the ascent of AI to prioritise soft talents over technical ones.
“The duration for which a degree remains relevant is decreasing quite significantly,” Raman stated.
In March, Goldman Sachs released a research stating that AI may potentially disrupt more than 300 million employment. In May, IBM, the company that employs Candy, said that it would temporarily stop hiring for positions that may be filled by AI.
“I can envision around 30% of those positions being replaced by AI and automation within a span of five years,” stated Arvind Krishna, CEO of IBM, in an interview with Bloomberg. He was specifically referring to the company’s back-office operations.
