China-based tech giant Huawei has taken the world by surprise with the grand launch of its most recent premier model, the Mate 60 Pro. Despite the prevailing U.S. sanctions, Huawei has managed to incorporate SMIC’s cutting-edge N+2 technology into this new smartphone iteration, thereby enabling potential network support for the advanced 5G standard.

During a visit by the United States Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, to China, aimed at ensuring the equilibrium of bilateral relations, Huawei astounded the industry by unveiling the much-anticipated flagship smartphone, the Mate 60 Pro. This move has been hailed as a clear demonstration of Huawei’s prowess and defiance in the face of the U.S. sanctions. The retail price of this remarkable device is set at CNY6,999 (equivalent to US$961), and it proudly boasts the innovative Harmony 4.0 operating system. Additionally, Huawei has positioned the Mate 60 Pro as the trailblazing pioneer in the realm of smartphones with satellite communication capabilities.

Citing the insights from software benchmarking tool AnTuTu, reputable Chinese news site MyDrivers has reported that the Mate 60 Pro is fueled by the formidable Kirin 9000s chipset. This advanced chipset houses a total of 12 cores, which encompass two high-performance A34 cores, six custom A789AE cores, and four A510 cores. The Mate 60 Pro further integrates a bespoke GPU, the Maleoon, although intricate specifics regarding this component remain shrouded in mystery.

Huawei’s official online store, VMall, does not explicitly stipulate whether the Mate 60 Pro supports 4G or the more advanced 5G technology. However, a plethora of test videos sourced from Chinese social networks, as reported by CNA, indicate an impressive average download speed range of 500-800Mbps, thus significantly surpassing the limitations of 4G technology, capped at 300Mbps. Notably, the Kirin 9000s chipset has been crafted using SMIC’s groundbreaking N+2 technology, a feat once acclaimed to be on par with TSMC’s initial-generation 7nm technology.

Turning our attention to the intricate components and software of the Mate 60 Pro, it’s important to acknowledge that they are all either conceived or developed within the realm of Chinese innovation. These elements include the sophisticated Kunlun Glass 2 display, the seamless Harmony 4.0 OS, and the advanced Pangu AI model.

It’s essential to note that Huawei has been operating under the restrictions imposed by U.S. sanctions, thereby inhibiting its access to American software and technologies. As a result, the company has refrained from introducing any 5G-capable smartphones since the year 2021. The extent to which Huawei has managed to extricate itself from dependence on U.S. technologies, including chipsets, remains a topic of speculation. The production capacity of the Mate 60 Pro is equally deserving of attention, as Chinese tech enthusiasts and bloggers ponder whether the initial shipments will be limited due to the device’s temporary unavailability in retail stores.
