AI poses a serious threat to humanity’s dominance, according to Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum.

Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, has spoken about the possible risks of extremely sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) overtaking human intelligence and taking over as the dominant species on Earth.
The Ethereum (ETH) mastermind stressed in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) that the outcome of this scenario will depend on human control and intervention in AI development.
Buterin maintained that because AI has the potential to produce a new kind of “mind” that can be harmful to human interests, it is essentially distinct from earlier technologies like social media, aircraft, and the printing press.
He was worried that if superintelligent AI developed unchecked, it may see people as a threat to its own existence and eventually wipe out humanity.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) is a new kind of mind that is rapidly becoming more intelligent. It has a good chance of surpassing human mental capabilities and rising to the position of the highest species on Earth.”
Though Buterin conceded that there is little chance of such catastrophic events occurring, he emphasised the necessity for people to exercise cautious.

In order to give humans more control over AI-based computing and cognition, he suggested integrating brain-computer interfaces, or BCI.
By creating a direct line of communication between the brain and outside gadgets, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow people to take an active role in making decisions.
BCIs would guarantee that humans maintain some degree of meaningful agency over the world by cutting down on the communication gap between humans and robots to milliseconds.
In order to reduce the possibility that AI would act in ways that are inconsistent with human values, Buterin underlined the significance of humans continuing to be in charge of high-level planning.
“We can lessen the motivation for the AI to take on high-level planning responsibilities on its own, which will lessen the likelihood that the AI will act in a way that is wholly inconsistent with human values.”
Buterin Emphasises the Need for AI Regulation
Buterin also emphasised how important human purpose is in directing AI towards outcomes that are advantageous to humanity.
He issued a warning against putting profit maximisation first and emphasised the need of making deliberate decisions that are in line with people’s values and goals.
Buterin commended humankind’s inventiveness and creative potential in his closing remarks.
He underlined how technology has always been used by humans to improve their capabilities and expressed hope that advances in humankind like space exploration and geoengineering will help preserve and enhance life on Earth and elsewhere.
“Human inventions like space travel and geoengineering will have been responsible for the continuation of Earthly life on Earth or in any other part of the universe after two billion years.”
