Elon Musk’s Twitter: Images and Links Erased Before 2014
Elon Musk’s Twitter Account Erases All Images and Links Before 2014
Under its former name, Twitter, the platform known as X is currently grappling with a problem that prevents any posts containing images or hyperlinks shortened with Twitter’s built-in URL shortening tool from being displayed. This issue has effectively eradicated all content of this nature that was posted on Twitter prior to 2014.
The exact cause of this issue remains uncertain, but it attracted attention on a Saturday afternoon when Tom Coates brought it up. Furthermore, a few days before that, a Brazilian vtuber who goes by the handle @DaniloTakagi had already drawn notice to this matter.
It appears that videos have not been impacted by this problem (Twitter only introduced native image and video support in 2011 and 2016, respectively), and YouTube links that were shortened using Twitter’s tool are now displayed as plain text.
As pointed out by Coates, this glitch had a significant impact, particularly on an iconic tweet from the time when they were still referred to as “tweets.” This specific tweet showcased a selfie shared by Ellen DeGeneres, the host of the 2014 Oscars, alongside celebrities such as Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. The selfie was taken during the live broadcast of the event.
This tweet became one of the most widely retweeted posts of all time, amassing over 2 million retweets. Fortunately, the image was restored around Sunday night. Thus far, neither Elon Musk nor CEO Linda Yaccarino have issued any public statements concerning this problem.
While there are speculations that Musk’s actions might have been a deliberate cost-saving measure, the presence of unchanged media content suggests that an error or glitch occurred.
This incident is just one among several problems that have arisen since the takeover and subsequent significant workforce reductions that took place last year.
