More Affordable Apple Vision Headset Expected to Debut by Late 2025

Apple intends to launch a more cost-effective iteration of its Vision Pro headset by the conclusion of 2025. As per Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the non-Pro variant will likely bear the name Apple Vision One or simply Apple Vision.

In his recent Power On newsletter, Gurman restated his understanding of Apple’s efforts to develop a budget-friendly version of the headset, indicating the company’s pursuit of a two-pronged strategy, similar to the standard iPhone and iPhone Pro models.

Given that the Vision Pro carries a price tag of $3,499, which is believed to approximate the manufacturing cost, Gurman speculates that Apple might replace the twin 4K microLED displays and the M2 Apple silicon chip with more economical alternatives, while also reducing the number of cameras used.

Additionally, the company might opt for a simpler headband design devoid of integrated speakers, necessitating the use of AirPods for spatial audio. However, Gurman believes there are certain aspects that Apple will not compromise on:

The external screen, referred to as EyeSight, which displays the wearer’s eyes, along with the eye- and hand-tracking system, are fundamental to the Apple Vision, akin to how a touchscreen is essential to an iPhone. I anticipate these features to be retained in a more affordable model.

Prior to the unveiling of the Vision Pro, commentators speculated on headset rumors, questioning the logic of adding the additional financial burden of an outward-facing display to an already expensive device, which could further drain its battery life. However, Apple evidently views the EyeSight feature as a key differentiating factor from enclosed AR/VR headsets, enabling users to maintain a sense of connection with others.

By achieving reduced material costs in various areas and streamlining the production process, Gurman suggests that Apple could potentially lower the headset’s price by several hundred dollars.

Reports of Apple’s plan to introduce an inexpensive version of its spatial computing headset first emerged in January, courtesy of The Information and Bloomberg. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also affirmed Apple’s intention to establish a two-tiered lineup of headsets by the end of 2025.
