The 14-inch MacBook Pro M3—one of the new gadgets Apple introduced at its ‘Scary Fast’ event—provides some insight into what 2024 MacBooks might look like. Of course, this is all speculative, but when Apple is so tight-lipped about forthcoming items, it’s wonderful to fantasize about potential MacBook products.
According to recent reports, M3 MacBook Air variants are expected in 2024, as well as the possibility of a low-cost MacBook to compete with Google’s successful Chromebooks. With the unveiling of a 14-inch MacBook Pro M3, we can guess a few more information about these two rumors.
Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 foreshadows MacBook performance in 2024.
Apple announced and introduced the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 in 2020, along with the 13-inch MacBook Air M1. The 13-inch MacBook Air M2 was then released in 2022, shortly after the 13-inch MacBook Pro M2.
The launch of the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 now, followed by the new M3 MacBook Airs in 2024, creates the greatest gap between new Pro and Air devices to date. This difference in delivery dates for Apple’s new M3 MacBooks is intriguing, but it also provides us with some uncommon insight into how well the new MacBook Air M3 models might perform.
The MacBook Pro M1 scored 5,882 on the Geekbench 5.0 overall performance test in our assessment. Meanwhile, in our assessment, the MacBook Air M1 scored 5,962 on the Geekbench 5.2 test.
Both laptops achieved nearly identical overall performance results, although the MacBook Air faltered slightly when handling more intensive tasks due to its fanless design. The Pro M1 outlasted the Air M1 by nearly two hours in terms of battery life.
When comparing the MacBook Pro M2 and the MacBook Air M2, the story is very similar. The 13-inch Pro M2 scored 8,911 on Geekbench 5.4, while the 13-inch Air M2 scored 8,919—basically the same overall performance score. The Pro M2’s battery then lasted around four hours longer than the Air M2 model.
With historically identical performance scores on Geekbench testing, the MacBook Air M3 is a good bet to match leaked Geekbench findings for Apple’s M3 MacBook Pro. Although there will not be a comparison of the two 13-inch versions because Apple is discontinuing the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the performance findings should be comparable.
It also gives us ideas for the anticipated low-cost MacBook.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro inexplicably vanished from the M3 selection, which is unfortunate for those looking for a little powerhouse laptop but fantastic for those hoping for Apple’s low-cost MacBook.
This low-cost MacBook, dubbed the MacBook SE by some, is supposed to be Apple’s response to Google’s dominance of the low-cost laptop market with its Chromebooks. With the 13-inch MacBook Pro design no longer available, Apple may be attempting to streamline its existing laptop designs ahead of a low-cost MacBook.
It’s possible that Apple will produce a new design for the ‘MacBook SE’ made of lower-quality (and cheaper) materials, but it’ll most likely be a smaller design similar to the 13-inch MacBook Air. To keep prices low, everything will be lowered in quality, but if Apple employs a similar design to the MacBook Air, they will most likely use an existing Apple Silicon chip.
Apple’s low-cost MacBook could be equipped with a lesser version of the M3, but it’s more likely that an M2 chip, or possibly a revamped M1 processor with renewed support, will be used.
