Google Pixel 8 camera leak reveals intricate details about the new primary sensor, exclusive enhancements for the Pro version, and more.
A comprehensive leak shared by Kamila Wojciechowska via Android Authority provides a meticulous breakdown of the anticipated camera features for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
The most noteworthy aspect unveiled is the introduction of a fresh primary camera sensor, namely the Samsung ISOCELL GN2, for both phone models. This 50MP sensor serves as a direct successor to the GN1 employed in Pixel 6 and 7, and it is also utilized in Samsung’s Galaxy S22 and S23. Notably, this sensor boasts a larger physical size, enabling it to capture approximately 35% more light in a given scene. Furthermore, this new sensor offers enhanced technical support for features like 8K video recording (Tensor G3 also supports this) and Staggered HDR, which were also leaked as forthcoming additions to the Pixel lineup.
In terms of exclusive upgrades for the Pixel 8 Pro, it is rumored to feature an additional time-of-flight sensor, specifically the 8×8 ToF VL53L8 sensor. While previous Tensor-based Pixel phones have included one of these sensors, the new iteration in the Pixel 8 Pro is expected to deliver significant improvements to autofocus capabilities. Additionally, the Pro version is said to include the Melexis MLX90632 as its temperature sensor, which solely serves the purpose of temperature measurement. Contrary to expectations, thermal imaging technology will not be incorporated into this specific component, despite its seemingly high cost.
Both phones will also benefit from upgrades to their ultrawide cameras. The Pixel 8 Pro will reportedly employ the 64MP Sony IMX787 sensor for its ultrawide camera, a notable advancement from the 12MP sensor previously utilized by Google for ultrawide photography. Interestingly, it has been mentioned that the Pixel 7 Pro’s macro mode may not make a return on this new device. As for the Pixel 8, its ultrawide camera will be upgraded to the 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor.
The telephoto lens on the Pixel 8 Pro, as well as the front-facing selfie camera on both phones, are reportedly remaining unchanged.
Software enhancements are also expected, as the Google Camera app appears to introduce three notable upgrades. These include the introduction of level selection for generating artificial bokeh effects in videos through the Cinematic mode, an Adaptive torch feature that adjusts the intensity of the LED flash based on the scene being captured, and finally, Segmentation AWB which employs AI to divide the captured scene into different components, allowing for more precise application of processing techniques to each part of the image.
