Android TV 14 Beta is Retiring Android 13 for a Paradigm Shift
Google has unveiled Android 14 Beta 3 for Pixel devices, along with a preview of Android 14 for televisions. In a decisive move, Google has chosen to retire Android 13 and introduce the novel Android TV 14 Beta.
As of now, Google has been reticent in divulging significant information regarding the noteworthy features of Android 14. This dearth of details was palpable during last month’s Google I/O event. Continuing this trend, the latest beta version for Android TV and Google TV devices was discreetly launched without any public proclamation.
HOW TO EXPERIENCE THE ANDROID 14 TV BETA
To partake in the Android TV 14 Beta, there are typically two primary methods. Firstly, you can avail yourself of an emulator of the preview through Android Studio. Secondly, Google usually provides a dedicated build for installation on their retired ADT-3 boxes. Regrettably, this latter build is presently unavailable on the Android Developers website. It is, unfortunately, impossible to install the Android TV 14 preview on a Chromecast.
GOOGLE RETIRES ANDROID 13
A recent alteration in the code signifies that Google has decided to entirely retire Android 13 for television platforms. Consequently, Android Studio will reflect this change by relocating the emulator for Android 13 to a menu that is not recommended for use.
We are phasing out the T version in Android TV. By moving the T image to the non-recommended menu, we aim to dissuade developers from creating T images if they are not necessary.
Considering the expeditious release of the beta preview for Android TV 14, it appears logical for Google to bypass the intermediate version and leap ahead to the newer iteration instead of adhering to an annual release cycle. A similar biennial pattern is expected for Wear OS, as the forthcoming Wear OS 4, scheduled for this autumn, is anticipated to make the transition from Android 11 to Android 13.
