Snapchat’s ‘Dreams’: AI-Generated Selfies in Imaginative Worlds
Snapchat is delving deeper into the realm of generative AI with its latest innovation, ‘Dreams.’
Snapchat is gearing up to make significant strides in the realm of generative AI capabilities. This comes after the successful launch of its AI-driven chatbot, My AI, which has evolved to not only respond with text but also with Snaps. The upcoming feature from Snapchat, aptly named “Dreams,” represents the next step in their explorations with AI-generated content. In this case, the images produced by AI might include both you and your friends, placed in creatively imaginative backgrounds.
The company has been hard at work developing functionalities that empower Snapchat users to either capture new selfies or upload existing ones. These selfies then become the basis for the app to generate novel pictures of you, situated in scenarios that align with your imaginative desires. This concept bears similarity to other AI-driven photo applications found on the App Store.
An example of such an app is Remini, which gained immense popularity recently as TikTok users realized its potential. By uploading their own selfies, users could receive professionally polished headshots suitable for their LinkedIn profiles, all without the need for an expensive professional photoshoot.
However, Snapchat’s ambitions go far beyond mundane headshots. The envisioned application of “Dreams” involves leveraging AI-generated selfies to embed images of individuals in extraordinary and fantastical settings. Insights from app researcher and developer Steve Moser point in this direction. Similar to other AI-powered selfie applications, Snapchat’s functionality requires clear and unobstructed selfies to work effectively. Furthermore, diverse angles, expressions, and lighting conditions contribute to generating superior AI-produced photographs, as the application will guide users.
In addition to the individual experience offered by these AI-generated “Dreams,” Snapchat is diligently working on a feature called “Dreams with Friends.” This innovative facet allows users to grant their friends permission to collaboratively create AI-generated “dream” images featuring both of them. This discovery was made by Moser during his research.
Hints within Snapchat’s application interface suggest the potential for monetization through the sale of “Dream Packs.” This intriguing concept could hint at a future where these AI-generated experiences become a marketable commodity.
The origins of Dreams date back to earlier this spring when reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi unveiled the concept. He revealed that users would soon be able to incorporate their own likeness into captivating realms conjured by generative AI. Notably, this upcoming feature claimed a prominent position within the Snapchat app, nestled between the Camera Roll and Stories sections.
The ongoing developments revolving around “Dreams with Friends” and the concept of “Dream Packs” indicate that Snapchat is wholeheartedly advancing this feature. While the company refrained from commenting on its future plans for Dreams, its commitment to AI innovation is undeniable.
