Saudi Arabia’s USB-C Mandate: Unified Charging for Electronics

Saudi Arabia is Enforcing USB C Ports on All Electronic Devices

A novel decree has been announced by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, enjoining the standardization of charging terminals across the spectrum of electronic devices. This mandate dictates that all apparatuses must embrace the USB-C protocol, with the initial phase of execution poised to commence on the first day of January in the year 2025.

Government representatives have signified that this endeavor is oriented towards augmenting user contentment, abating expenditures and electronic refuse, and facilitating high-caliber data transfers.

The directive emanates from a collaborative effort between the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization in conjunction with the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission.

The inaugural stage of execution will encompass mobile telephones and a myriad of other electronic contrivances such as earphones, input devices, sound amplification instruments, data routers, and analogous items. A subsequent stage will take inception on the first day of April in the year 2026, incorporating laptops and portable computational devices within its purview.

According to the evaluations conducted by these establishments, consumers are poised to amass savings of approximately $45 million, concurrently curbing charger consumption by more than 2.2 million units annually.

This maneuver arrives shortly after the European Union mandated USB C interfaces for all contrivances retailed in Europe during the year 2023. This stands as the principal impetus behind the compulsion for the forthcoming iPhone 15 series to adopt USB C interfaces this year—a product line that has hitherto relied upon Lightning connectors or alternative couplings for a span of over a decade.

However, in contrast to the European timeline, corporations operating within Saudi Arabia have until the year 2025 to effectuate the transition of their smartphones and other diminutive devices to USB C interfaces. Conversely, the deadline for laptops and other portable computational devices to effect the same transition extends until the year 2026.
