Nintendo’s Explanation of Dolphin Emulator DMCA: Stifling Innovation
Nintendo has elucidated its position regarding the Dolphin emulator’s DMCA complaint, asserting that the project ‘hampers the progress of innovation’.
Merely a few days ago, Nintendo lodged a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint against Valve for their inclusion of the Dolphin emulator in a Steam listing, enabling users to indulge in Wii and GameCube titles. Valve promptly responded by removing the aforementioned listing from their digital marketplace after notifying the emulator’s development team of the predicament.
Consequently, the Dolphin team has disclosed that the anticipated release on Steam has been indefinitely delayed. Moreover, the developers behind Dolphin are currently engrossed in exploring various alternatives for their future endeavors, although it is highly likely that Nintendo will vigilantly monitor their every course of action.
While we were apprised of this calamity last week, Nintendo has now proffered additional remarks on the issue. A representative from Nintendo has furnished a statement to Kotaku regarding the DMCA, which not only clarifies Nintendo’s motives for pursuing legal action against the emulation team but also sheds light on their vehement opposition to emulation in general.
