END of Your Beloved Reddit App | A Deep Dive into the Reddit API Controversy

The imminent Closure of Your Beloved Reddit Application

For years, Reddit has served as a popular wellspring of news and communal discourse, fueled by a plethora of third-party applications catering to iPhone, Android, Windows, and other platforms. Regrettably, this era is now drawing to a close.

In the bygone month of April, Reddit made public its intentions to bring forth alterations to its API, which functions as the lifeline for third-party Reddit apps and services, enabling content loading and diverse operations. Although the initial announcement was somewhat enigmatic, it became evident that Reddit intended to levy greater fees upon developers for API access. Despite the fact that third-party Reddit apps generate heightened interaction and commentary, surpassing what would otherwise be present, they do not present advertisements akin to those featured on the official Reddit app and desktop site. Furthermore, the new API terms prohibit the training of AI models using Reddit’s invaluable data.

This announcement instantaneously ignited a fierce debate among Reddit users, who found themselves uncertain whether esteemed third-party clients such as Apollo for Reddit, Sync for Reddit, rif is fun, and other applications would retain their existing forms. Eventually, Reddit disclosed specific pricing details to select app developers, revealing a significantly steeper cost. For instance, the creator of Apollo for Reddit claimed that sustaining the app’s operation would require an exorbitant sum of nearly $2 million per month.

Given that exorbitant API access costs are not sustainable for the majority of apps, particularly those that are free or offered as a one-time purchase, a multitude of applications are preemptively closing their doors before the implementation of the new API pricing scheme. The creator of Apollo for Reddit expressed, Apollo has had an extraordinary journey. I have had the privilege of connecting with remarkable individuals, engaging in over 15,000 discussions within our subreddit about Apollo, and even raising over $80,000 for a local animal shelter through the app. I consider myself incredibly fortunate.

The developer of Reddit is Fun similarly stated, The Reddit API will entail considerable costs, and based on today’s pricing announcement, apps like Apollo will face expenses of $20 million annually. RIF might differ slightly, but it would fall within the same range. And no, RIF does not even come close to generating this level of revenue. Likewise, the creator of Sync for Reddit conveyed, I want to unequivocally express my reluctance in closing Sync. Devoting myself to this app has been a labor of love and the focal point of my life for the past decade. Unfortunately, given the present circumstances, I fail to see an alternative.

Earlier this year, Twitter executed a similar clampdown on its API, propelled by Elon Musk (the current owner of Twitter) in his pursuit of bolstering the company’s profits. The consequences were drastic, as nearly all third-party apps, including Tweetbot and Twitterrific, were forced to cease operations. In response, certain developers adapted their apps for Mastodon, leading to the subsequent release of Ivory by the creators of Tweetbot—an exquisite Mastodon application available for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Emergency services were also affected by Twitter’s API modifications until a special exception was made for them in May.

It is disheartening to witness the simultaneous termination of third-party apps by two significant social platforms within such a short span of time. Nevertheless, this is merely capitalism operating as designed. Musk has been fervently seeking methods to extract greater profits from Twitter, while Reddit aspires to transform into a publicly-traded enterprise, capitalizing on a more lucrative advertising business by the end of 2023.
