This week, Google will start erasing Gmail accounts that are no longer active.
In an effort to strengthen user security, Google said earlier this year that it would be erasing Gmail accounts that are no longer active by December of this year.
The corporation took action after realizing that accounts that are neglected or mishandled are more susceptible to hacking as there are no security measures in place like two-step verification.
Two-step verification is at least ten times less likely to be enabled on inactive accounts than it is on active ones, according to Axios.
Google has changed its policy about accounts in light of this, saying that “once an account is compromised, it can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector for unwanted or even malicious content, like spam.”
Accounts that have not been used for two years, together with any associated data and information, may be removed as of December 1.
Nevertheless, accounts created through a company or educational institution are exempt from this policy. Before deleting an account, Google will send notifications to the email address associated with the account as well as, if one was provided, a recovery email.
You can stay away from Google’s endeavor to rid the internet community of potentially dangerous members while still using your accounts. That’s what to do, here.
If you can’t recall signing in at least once every two years, now’s the perfect opportunity to maintain your older Google accounts. It’s not hard to do so.
Your account will remain active through further actions including sending or receiving emails, using Google Drive, seeing YouTube videos, installing apps from the Google Play Store, searching on Google, and using Google to log in to other apps or services.
In addition, using an app that is linked to your Google account, a news source, or a Google One subscription all qualify as activities.
