Nokia's Legacy Lives On: HMD Global's Next-Gen Devices

Nokia phone manufacturer, HMD, is embarking on the creation of its unique smartphone marque. HMD Global, the renowned Finnish company recognized for crafting Nokia-branded smartphones, has unveiled its intentions to introduce a fresh line of mobile devices. In a recent announcement on LinkedIn, HMD Global’s CEO, Jean-Francois Baril, disclosed the company’s plans to expand its repertoire with a novel HMD brand. This brand will exist alongside its Nokia phones, and there are intriguing partnerships on the horizon, yet to be revealed.

Baril remarked, “It has been a splendid odyssey as ‘HMD – the domicile of Nokia phones,’ an exclusive mantle we have adorned for the past six years. Now, we stand prepared for the next phase of our expedition – to enter the market autonomously, wielding our influence to shape a novel telecommunications realm that is attuned to the desires of consumers.”

At present, no supplementary information regarding the forthcoming HMD products has been provided, nor have any hints surfaced regarding a potential release date. Our efforts to solicit further details from HMD Global are underway, and we shall furnish an update to this narrative upon their response.

The establishment of HMD Global transpired following Microsoft’s relinquishment of its rights to the Nokia brand in 2016. Subsequently, Foxconn assumed control of Microsoft’s feature phone business, with Terry Gou, the founder of Foxconn, emerging as the primary proprietor of HMD Global. As it stands, Foxconn is the current manufacturer of Nokia-branded devices, rendering it probable that any impending HMD-branded products will similarly be produced by the Taiwanese tech colossus.

Historically, Nokia-branded phones, such as the Nokia C32, launched by HMD, have predominantly occupied the budget-to-mid-tier echelons. It appears that future HMD-branded devices will continue this trend. Baril has affirmed the company’s commitment to “crafting solutions for a more sustainable and economically accessible future.” Even if Foxconn presides over the actual fabrication of these nascent devices, HMD Global Oy, headquartered in Espoo, remains under the aegis of former Nokia executives. This endeavor may offer the company an occasion to revive elements of the brand’s legacy under a novel nomenclature.
