Enhancing Gmail’s Mobile App: The Awaited ‘Select All Feature’
The Gmail application may soon incorporate a “select all” feature for the purpose of bulk email deletion. Gmail’s Android application provides nearly all the functionalities available on its web counterpart. It boasts support for multiple inboxes, the capacity to defer or silence an email conversation, allocate labels, and more. However, one notable deficiency in the application becomes apparent. While selecting all emails in Gmail via the web interface is a straightforward task, the mobile application lacks this essential function. Consequently, if your intention is to archive or designate all emails on the current page as “read,” you are compelled to manually select them. It has come to light that Google is presently laboring on the inclusion of a “Select all” function into Gmail’s Android application.
A prominent leaker, @AssembleDebug, has identified the “Select all” button in the most recent Gmail version dated August 20, 2023, with the release number 2023.08.20.561750975. This option will become visible immediately upon tapping a single email within the application. Subsequent to this action, you will be able to archive, defer, silence, mark emails as “read” or “unread,” and more.
Gmail enforces a limitation on the quantity of emails retrieved from its servers to 50 per request. Consequently, the selection of “Select all” will result in the highlighting of the initial 50 emails located in your inbox. By tapping the button once more, you can select an additional 50 email threads. Once Gmail has cached these emails locally, selecting “Select all” will encompass the entirety of your emails, even if this exceeds the 50-item threshold. If you choose to do so, you may also utilize the “Deselect all” button to clear the highlights on all 100+ emails.
Notwithstanding this restriction, the introduction of the “Select all” feature in Gmail’s mobile application will greatly streamline bulk actions, particularly if you contend with the receipt of hundreds of emails on a daily basis.
Regrettably, there remains an absence of clarity regarding the timeline for the introduction of the new “Select all” feature in Gmail. Nevertheless, it is a positive development to observe Google’s dedication to incorporating this button into Gmail’s mobile application, even after many years. Optimistically, its rollout will occur sooner rather than later. In the interim, if you are unable to patiently await this feature, you may wish to contemplate transitioning to one of the premier email applications available for Android.
