Meta and LG’s Collaboration: Challenging Apple’s Vision Pro Dominance

Meta and LG's Collaboration Challenging Apple's Vision Pro Dominance

Meta and LG are reportedly collaborating on a formidable rival to Apple’s Vision Pro. Prior to Apple’s Vision Pro unveiling, Meta had already introduced virtual reality headsets under the Meta Quest brand, a development that transpired after their acquisition of Oculus. Nevertheless, Meta’s headsets have not enjoyed significant success. Yet, Mark Zuckerberg appears to harbor ambitious intentions of challenging the supremacy of Apple Vision Pro. Recent reports indicate that Meta has embarked on a collaborative venture with LG aimed at constructing a cutting-edge VR headset.

Meta and LG Embarking on the Quest Pro Journey

According to a report disclosed by UploadVR, Meta and LG have joined forces to usher in future iterations of the Quest Pro headsets. Initially, it was presumed that Meta was merely engaged in discussions with LG Display, a subsidiary of LG responsible for displays. However, fresh revelations suggest that this partnership has evolved into a “far-reaching collaboration” encompassing other LG subsidiaries.

The assembly of the new headset would be overseen by LG Electronics, while LG Energy and LG Innotek would supply essential components such as batteries. Notably, LG Display would provide the Micro OLED displays, granting LG a more substantial role in shaping the device’s production.

While Apple is diligently focused on delivering a premium user experience with its new headset, Meta appears to have a broader spectrum of interests, encompassing both the premium and entry-level markets. Industry insiders suggest that the forthcoming Meta and LG headset is slated for a 2025 launch with an estimated price point of approximately $2,000. Comparatively, the existing Meta Quest Pro retails at $999, implying that both companies are likely to invest in enhancing the hardware’s capabilities to compete effectively with Apple Vision Pro. Concurrently, Meta is preparing to introduce the more affordable Meta Quest 3, priced at $499.

A New Challenger for Apple Vision Pro

It is irrefutable that Apple has embraced cutting-edge technology in the development of Vision Pro. While the precise specifications remain undisclosed, it is known that the headset features a Micro OLED display with a resolution exceeding 4K for each eye. Vision Pro boasts an array of 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, facilitating advanced gesture and voice recognition, thus eliminating the need for physical controls.

Internally, Apple Vision Pro relies on the M2 chip, identical to the one used in the latest Macs, and incorporates a novel R1 chip that enables real-time rendering of images captured by the cameras. In contrast, the existing Meta Quest Pro features a 2K LCD display for each eye, a mere five cameras, and is equipped with physical controls to enhance precision. It operates on a Snapdragon XR2 chip.

With a higher price tag, Meta may be poised to enhance certain aspects of their offering to align more closely with Vision Pro. Nevertheless, the future trajectories of both devices remain largely shrouded in uncertainty. Meta’s “Reality Labs XR” division has experienced declining revenues, while analysts project that Apple will not exceed sales of 400,000 Vision Pro units by 2024.
