Another PlayStation Showcase Allegedly Scheduled for 2023
Reportedly, PlayStation is currently in the process of organizing another grand exhibition later this year. The landscape of the video game industry has experienced a peculiar transformation over the past four years or so. Prior to the disruptive onset of the pandemic in 2020, the industry primarily revolved around extravagant events, brimming with spectacle, typically held during the summertime at E3. However, as we approached the pandemic era, these events gradually dwindled in frequency, although they remained a significant focal point. Once the pandemic struck, a shift towards digital showcases ensued, occurring with greater regularity. Rather than a singular, monumental show in the summer, a series of more intimate-scale events became the norm. For some, this transition has been somewhat underwhelming, giving rise to feelings of profound disappointment.
The most recent PlayStation Showcase boasted an impressive lineup of exceptional games, including the much-anticipated gameplay unveiling of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Nevertheless, it left many viewers with a lingering sense of emptiness. It failed to evoke the awe-inspiring impact characteristic of previous PlayStation events held in bygone years. This may be attributed, at least in part, to the absence of games like The Last of Us multiplayer due to development setbacks. Moreover, some individuals expressed uncertainty regarding the future trajectory of PlayStation’s first-party offerings after the Spider-Man release. However, it appears that clarity may soon be forthcoming. According to Ethan Gach of Kotaku, a reputable source, both another PlayStation Showcase and a Nintendo showcase are slated to grace our screens later this year. Gach’s tweet is somewhat ambiguous, as it remains plausible that these showcases may take the form of the PlayStation State of Plays, which could encompass anything from a rapid succession of exciting new game reveals to an in-depth exploration of a highly anticipated title like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Regardless, it is apparent that there are more noteworthy events on the horizon. Showcases have seemingly become infrequent affairs, with Sony abstaining from hosting one altogether last year. Whether this pattern will change in the future remains to be seen. Perhaps PlayStation deliberately withheld certain revelations for various reasons, intending to compensate for this omission later in the year through the staging of another spectacular Showcase.
