Cutting-Edge Security Robots: A Glimpse into Switzerland’s Latest Innovation
This Swiss two-wheeled automaton stands as the latest embodiment of security in the nation. Security personnel possesses immense utility, some might even argue indispensability. However, their deployment comes with substantial costs, and the sheer scarcity of their presence prohibits ubiquitous coverage.
Within the confines of Europe, denizens of Switzerland have been privileged to observe the advent of a patrol automaton, a brainchild of Ascento, a robotics startup hailing from ETH Zurich. This mechanical marvel has thus far assumed the role of a guardian for the esteemed Swiss security firm, Securitas AG.
A visual testament provided by ETH Zurich attests to the astounding dexterity of this novel security custodian, enabling it to traverse numerous locales without missing a beat (pun intended!). Clearly, this emerging automaton possesses the necessary attributes to surveil a multitude of areas, traversing varied terrains. However, one must contemplate whether it can exhibit the same level of attentiveness as its human counterparts.
In the month of October in 2019, headlines were made when a robotic patrol entity, colloquially referred to as a RoboCop, garnered attention for its refusal to aid a distressed woman despite her repeated pleas while pressing the emergency button.
Subsequent reports revealed that these HP RoboCops, developed and leased by Knightscope, had yet to establish direct connections with law enforcement agencies. Consequently, pressing the emergency button would notify Knightscope, who in turn would contact the police.
Cosme Lozano, the chief of police in Huntington Park, elucidated at the time: That’s why we are not publicizing those functionalities. It is a nascent program for us, and we are still refining certain protocols to achieve complete program integration.
Merely a month ago, the New York Police Department (NYPD) introduced an array of crime-fighting automatons tasked with patrolling subway stations throughout New York City. According to a report, these novel contraptions constitute pilot programs slated for summer implementation.
Ensuring the safety of New Yorkers, visitors, and all inhabitants of this metropolis compels us to scour the globe for cutting-edge technologies, declared Mayor Eric Adams during the ceremonial inauguration of these mechanical sentinels. This is but the initial phase of an expansive series of deployments.
Let us harbor optimism that these fresh automatons, now stationed within both cities, shall prove more efficacious in deterring criminal activities than their predecessor, the RoboCop.
