Bing AI's Ethical Stand Refuses to Write Cover Letter for Job Applicant

Bing AI’s Ethical Stand: Refuses to Write Cover Letter for Job Applicant. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our daily lives has revolutionized the way we approach tasks that were once time-consuming and laborious. AI has evolved so much that it can now converse with users, offer solutions to complex problems, and even write essays. But when a Singapore-based writer working for Business Insider, Huileng Tan, asked Microsoft’s AI-powered search engine Bing to write her a cover letter, the response was unexpected. Bing refused to write the cover letter, stating that it would be “unethical and unfair to other applicants.”

However, Bing’s AI offered some helpful tips and provided links to cover-letter writing resources. The tips included “research the company and the role, and tailor your cover letter to show how you fit their needs and values” and “use a clear and professional tone, and avoid spelling and grammar errors.”

The conversation with Bing did not end there. At the end of its response, the AI wished her “good luck.” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who recently announced the launch of the new Bing integrated with ChatGPT, stated that it will lead to a platform shift “from a search engine to an answer engine.” Nadella further emphasized that Bing’s AI integration was done keeping in mind human values.

However, the extraordinary capabilities of AI have left many security experts concerned about its potential misuse by “bad actors.” Mira Murati, the chief technology officer (CTO) at OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, acknowledged that AI can be misused and emphasized the need for responsible use.

Despite this, the integration of AI in our daily lives continues to grow, offering solutions to an increasing number of complex problems. Bing’s refusal to write a cover letter, it has also highlighted the importance of ethics in AI, as it is still important for humans to maintain control over decisions made by machines.
